Since May 15, 1997 — through Decree 171 — Cuban homeowners are allowed to greet tourists by renting rooms. In Cuba, these are called “Hostales”, or “Casas Particulares” just because they are located in private homes. The difference being that in Cuba, breakfast is not included in room rates, although some lodging owners can do it.

These hostales are the property of Cubans. All have to maintain a stringent cleaniness, hygiene and basic comfort standards imposed by the gobernment regulations.

Facilities vary a lot from one hostal to another, most of them offers a private bathroom, hot water shower, air conditioning, a terrace, a balcony or the use of the family patio, a pool. Other homes are considered modern, dating from the 50’s or 60’s where a warm and cozy atmosphere compensate for the intimacy and exiguity of the house or apartment. In Remedios, most of the houses are colonial style, with large and fresh rooms, high ceilings and ceramic floors, in a typically Spanish colonial setting with and period furniture.

Services vary from one lodging to another but the most common are breakfast, lunch (less popular) and dinners, wich can provide you with a large variety of dishes and exquisite offers in some cases, parking, laundry service, information, etc. Some lodging owners treat their guests as family, pleasing them to every little detail, and make friends among them.

All the legal lodgings will show on the door this logotype. This means that the owner is registered and pays the regular taxes and is regulary inspected by the Cuban Ministery of Tourism in order to ensure the quality of the services. The green color indicates that the propietary is allowed to rent rooms to foreign citizens, and the payments will be carried out in Cuban Convertible Pesos (C.U.C.)

The red color in the same logotype indicates that the rooms will be rented only to national citizens instead of foreign, so the payments will be in the Cuban Peso (C.U.P)
